Following a series of lessons, your child will have the opportunity to practice the skills they have learned with sound spellings and individual words in connected text. Rest assured, your child was introduced to and had the practice needed to read the passage. However, because they are honing their new skills, it will take a few readings before the child can read the text fluently. In reading instruction, repeated readings give students the practice needed to achieve automaticity.
An invitation from your child into his or her world of learning to read is an honor to treasure. It takes courage to take risks toward becoming a proficient reader. It is not easy to share their vulnerability, as they solve words and make meaning of what they read. To be an effective coach we must show respect for their learning process and welcome the oppotunity to support their developing skills. The developing reader will make mistakes, but errors can sharpen into gems of brilliance with the proper response.
Provide a safe space for their learning as you support thier efforts, consider these "talk moves" when your witty little reader encounters challenges as they read.
Coaching Talk Moves for Misreads
Start with these "Coaching Talk Moves", I will add more as we progress with lessons.
Misread 1: Say, Try it again.
Misread of the same word: Say, " Read it slow."
Misread the word again: Ask, What do you notice about the word? After the student tells you, ask them to try again. If they read it correctly, praise their effort.
I will send links to reading passages to practice with your child and include "Coaching Talk Moves" to support your work of coaching your developing reader.
